Hideous Beauties
Eraserhead Press:
Portland: 2003
Trade paperback, Fine,
190 pp.
Twelve stories. Like most of the stuff Eraserhead does - pretty outrageous. Stories based on a photo, painting, sketch or other visual artistic inspirations. Death is a village of mermaids. Suburbia is a hunchbacked dwarf at the door who won’t go away, sex is a radical form of digestion. Lance Olsen is that very special kind of fabulist: the kind that comes to it naturally and organically. I’ve never read anything by Olsen that seemed contrived or self-conscience. He’s just plain weird. . . and I like that. #19955
