34 stories. Not exactly horror. Not exactly science fiction, fantasy, mystery or mainstream. A collection of peculiar and inventive stories that are well-crafted. Hughes is an interesting writer. Jeff Vandermeer compares him to Italo Calvino, and I think that’s pretty apt. I’d throw Alasdair Gray in there too. I really like the guy. I mean, I really like his stuff a lot. Highly visual, extremely goofy without TRYING to be goofy, and good. Very good indeed. This would make a swell introduction to a guy that’s become one of my favorite writers. The short story: it’s still alive and well, and in this case, it’s in very good hands indeed. This book is a print-on-demand title. #18741
