The first in a projected three volume set that will collect virtually all of Le Fanu’s short supernatural fiction. Collected and introduced by James Rockhill. Arranged chronologically so that the reader can be witness to Le Fanu’s developing talents. Le Fanu, James, Wakefield, Benson. . . Ash-Tree has done a fabulous job of unearthing and encasing masters of the macabre from days gone by. However, I think the ore in these mines is just about tapped-out, but there’s still a few scattered nuggets here and there. The collected Le Fanu is certainly worthy. This volume (and I imagine the subsequent ones as well) is limited to 650 copies. Very nice indeed. Once you’ve exposed yourself to the old masters and developed a taste for the classical style, you’ll find it most difficult to appreciate the vast majority of contemporary horror writers. #17300
