The second literary adventure of Thursday Next. Actually, adventures IN literature. Quite literally. Here Thursday helps Miss Havisham close narrative loopholes in GREAT EXPECTATIONS and struggles for a deeper understanding of THE TALE OF THE FLOPSY BUNNIES. She also encounters paper politicians, lost Shakespeare manuscripts, and a woolly mammoth. She manages to avoid a number of near-fatal coincidences while trying to divert the impending Armageddon. Fforde has carved a place for himself in the contemporary literary landscape by sending his characters to inhabit those of days gone by. Good idea. I found his first novel, THE EYRE AFFAIR, a bit confusing but ultimately satisfying and very funny. #16483
